Summer is now officially here but, unlike last year, this one is shaping up to be typically English. Cool, on the damp side with occasional bright patches which last just long enough to convince you than they’ll last all summer.
Still, regardless of the weather there’s plenty to look forward to this summer when staying at the Varsity Hotel, Cambridge.
Summer Events
Musical events occur year round in Cambridge. But it’s in the summer that they really come alive. Perhaps it is the (hopefully) good weather that inspires musicians to play outdoors. Or perhaps it is simply that large indoor venues are scarce while open parks are plentiful. Either way, we have several interesting musical events upcoming.
First is the already running Jazz and Brass in the Parks. This is a series of informal jazz/brass events played in various parks across Cambridge at 3-5pm on selected Sunday afternoons from June to September.
Then moving into July we begin with the Big Weekend, 5th-7th July on Parker’s Piece. This is followed by a series of classical music concerts running from 13th-27th of July. And finally the Cambridge Folk Festival 1st-4th of August.
Of course, if music isn’t your thing there are plenty of other options. Newmarket Nights run all the way from June 8th to August 24th. And of course the annual Tudor pageant that is the Cambridge Shakespeare Festival runs from July 8th to August 24th.
New at the Varsity
And as the summer season ramps up we at the Varsity Hotel haven’t been idle. Our stunning Roof Terrace is now fully open (weather permitting) throughout the week and into the long summer nights. This now includes a BBQ menu available on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
We’ve also given our venues a bit of a makeover. Approaching the River Bar Steakhouse, Glassworks Gym or the hotel’s main entrance you’ll spot the changes at a distance. And when enjoying an Afternoon Tea is our Six Panoramic Restaurant you’ll be treated to the sight of a veritable wall of flowers when you’re not looking out at the skyline.
But most importantly we have fully enclosed the two (formerly) open air balconies in our Six Panoramic Restaurant. With retractable roofs and delicate cascades of flowers, these beautiful balconies represent a significant increase in the number of tables available in Six year round, and all enjoy an excellent view. In addition, these balconies are now available for private hire.
