Christmas is Coming!
There was a time in the not too distant past when Christmas was considered a modest affair. A family matter. A time for families to gather together to feast, exchange gifts, and catch up with what everyone was up to. Or perhaps to drink too much and get into loud arguments about things that happened decades ago, depending upon the family in question.
Still, what set it apart from other holidays was that it was a somewhat lengthy affair. Typically lasting a few days. Meaning that a family could reasonably buy a whole turkey and make multiple meals from it. A full turkey roast first; a selection of cold meat and crisps later; and a turkey stock based soup for following days.
These types of family gatherings still exist. But they have become overwhelmed by the sheer scope of the phenomena of a modern Christmas. For nowadays Christmas is no longer a day. Nor even just a few. But instead an entire season that in some cases seems to last for a full sixth of the entire year.
Christmas Parties
But why? Why has it grown so out of control. Cynics might point to a capitalist desire to squeeze as much money out of people as possible. While romantics posit that the winter is long, cold and dark – Christmas was always the light in that darkness that helps the weary soul keep going. So why not have that light burn a little longer?
But another reason is due to Christmas Parties. Back in the day people might attend a work Christmas Party. And possibly a second, with their spouse. But these days the trend has grown. Now you can expect every organisation, department, club, hobby or study group you know to put on their own Christmas party sometime over the next few weeks. These can range from huge and corporate, to cozy and personal.
