The Christmas Season is coming to its climax at long last.  For the past few weeks there have been Christmas Parties and Events for every organisation, club or hobby you’re even vaguely aware of.  But now we’re coming up to the main event – Christmas Day itself!  As always, we at the Varsity Hotel Cambridge stand ready to make your Christmas memorable.

Christmas Day

For many people in this country, Christmas Day is a time for family.  A grand gathering of family and a festive meal best described as a banquet.  One, sometimes even two starter courses.  Then a main course often consisting of roast turkey and ham with all the trimmings.  Then Christmas pudding, cheese and biscuits.  Followed a few hours later with the first of many eat-up sessions of the cold leftovers.

Family traditions and menus vary wildly, with no-one truly able to agree on what constitutes a quintessential Christmas meal.  However, there are occasionally some serious problems with any such family banquet.  Namely, what happens when the family member hosting the meal doesn’t have the skill or space to cook such a repast?

This could be a serious issue.  After all, Christmas Day is a bank holiday in the UK.  And unlike almost all other bank holidays, restaurants actually tend to close for the day.  Robbing people of the option of dining out that day.  However, by their nature, hotels remain open and hotels are required to provide their guests with at least some food options at all times.

At the Varsity Hotel we’ve decided to lean into this.  With both our Six Panoramic Restaurant and our River Bar Steakhouse open for Christmas Day lunch.  In each venue we offer different though identically themed Christmas Day menus perfectly suited for a family who want a traditional Christmas feast but can’t quite pull it off themselves.  Please note, however, that this menu will be our only offering on this day, and that both venues are closed in the evening.

New Year’s Eve

Then of course, hot on the heels of Christmas comes the New Year’s celebrations as well.  As is traditional, our New Year’s Eve celebrations will continue well into the small hours of the New Year itself.  The champagne will flow and the music will drive us on into 2024.

As for Christmas Day, both our venues offer a New Year’s Eve set menu for you to sink your teeth into before welcoming in 2024.  Book ahead!  Taking in the turn of the year with one of the best views in Cambridge is, as you might expect, a popular choice.

Either way, we look forward to inviting you back to the Varsity Hotel Cambridge in 2024.
