We’re into December now, and with it we have entered the frenzy of the Christmas Season.  A time of Christmas shopping, huge numbers of Christmas parties, more Christmas shopping, and plans to be made for Christmas travel and family feasts.  All against the backdrop of the ever-intensifying cold.  Time for us at the Varsity Hotel Cambridge to lighten your load and try to make the season as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

Christmas Season

There are typically a lot of events going on this time of year.  It sometimes feels like we’ve got a quota of partying to use up by the end of the year or we’ll lose it.  And so as December is our last opportunity, we’re going to make use of it by partying heavily this month.

This year is, of course, different than most.  Some annual events have been either cancelled or seriously scaled back.  Christmas markets in the surrounding towns and cities are notable in this regard.  The Mill Road Winter Fair didn’t go ahead again this year.  Though rather than let this get them down they instead hosted a number of smaller events – the Mill Road Saturdays.

This sort of innovation has been happening all across the city.  Larger events haven’t been possible.  So instead we’ve seen a glut of more frequent smaller events which in some ways have proven superior and/or preferable to the bigger events they are replacing.  And to be quite the proverbial silver lining.

At the Varsity Hotel we’re well set up to host many of these smaller events.  Both our Six Panoramic Restaurant and our River Bar Steakhouse are excellent venues for Christmas parties large or small.  Our Christmas party menus easily scalable to your needs.

Christmas Shopping

But we really don’t need specialised Christmas markets to enable our Christmas shopping needs.  After all, Cambridge was originally founded as a market town.  And for centuries has been the large settlement everyone in the region came to to shop.

Time may have updated this aspect of the city, but it hasn’t fundamentally changed it.  True, the lovely medieval market square is still present at the heart of the city.  But these days the stalls are as likely to sell electronics or exotic spices as they are local produce or quality leather goods.  Still, between them the various market stalls and the sheer range of shops on Mill Road provide some truly excellent inspiration for Christmas presents.

However, if you’re stuck for ideas for Christmas presents then we have the perfect solution for you.  We offer gift vouchers for all of the services on offer in our different venues.  Perhaps a stressed out friend could really do with a relaxing massage and jacuzzi in our Glassworks Gym and Spa.  Or a luxurious Afternoon Tea up in Six.

Whatever it is, we’ve got a voucher for it.  And best of all, the recipient can enjoy it in their own time, at their own pace and when their schedule allows.  Which in the middle of a stressful Christmas season always feels lovely.
